"The baroque Neptune Fountain is one of the most beautiful fountains in Berlin and stands centrally on the open space between Marienkirche and Rotem Rathaus.

The Neptune Fountain in front of the Red Town Hall is known to Berliners as the "Forckenbecken". This term fitted twofold: on the one hand the then mayor of Berlin was called Forckenbeck, on the other hand the term fits perfectly to the fountain itself, because Neptune stands with his trident is the hand in a basin. The four female figures at his feet symbolize the rivers Elbe, Rhine, Oder and Vistula.

Dismantling of the Neptune Fountain
The Neptune Fountain was originally built in 1891 in front of the Berlin City Palace. It was a gift from Berlin to Emperor Wilhelm II. The builder of the fountain, Reinhold Begas, achieved fame through him. While the fountain had survived the Second World War without major damage, the figures were damaged by non-ferrous metal thieves in 1946. When the Berlin City Palace was blown up, the figures were stored and the red marble fountain bowl destroyed.

Reconstruction of the Neptune Fountain at the Ninth Site
It was not until 1969 that the fountain with its figures was rebuilt, this time at a different location. The open space created after the war between the Red Town Hall and St. Mary's Church was occupied by the Neptune Fountain. The new fountain bowl consists of red granite, the figures were renovated.

In the course of the new building of the Berlin City Palace as the Humboldt Forum, the relocation of the Neptune Fountain to its original location on the Palace Square is being considered."
