The Acropolis (high city) is a 490 high plateau which contains the remains of several ancient buildings, the most important of which is the Parthenon. Construction of the original building began after the Greek victory of Eurymedon at 468 BC. The Parthenom is 228 by 101 ft rectangle which is 45' high Parthenon and was rebuilt in 447 - 432 BC by order of Pericles during the Golden Age of Athens (460 - 430 BC). It is dedicated to the goddess Athena.
Another important structure is the Erechtheion, an ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis which is dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon. On the south side of the Erechtheion is the "Porch of the Maidens" with features six female figures, known as the caryatids, that function as supporting columns.
