Brothers Sgt. John P. McKay and Capt. Thomas M. McKay were killed during in the Civil War they are buried in a family plot marked by a marble obelisk. John P. McKay was killed at the Battle of Ball's Bluff. His inscription reads:

SARG'T JOHN P. MCKAY
20 Regt. Mass. V.I.
born in Boston
May 15, 1841
killed at Ball's Bluff
Oct. 21, 1861
aged 20 yrs 5 months
There is an unsolved mystery surrounding his brother's death.
The inscription on the obelisk only states he was killed in Culpepper, VA. on Oct. 5, 1863. He apparently he was a murder victim caught up in a love triangle. According to research on the subject of his death the "actual murderer was a snubbed suitor of McKay's fiancee who had enlisted in a New York Regiment brigaded with the 20th for the sole purpose of killing McKay".
