This memorial is dedicated to French General Rochambeau and marks the site of a French camp in Providence, Rhode Island, during the late autumn of 1782. The French troops’ stay on Jeremiah Dexter’s property in Providence was due to the wait for space on vessels traveling from Boston to St. Domingue, modern-day Haiti. This French encampment was from November 13 to December 4, 1782.
The stone monument has a patinated plaque which reads:
ON THIS GROUND
BETWEEN HOPE STREET AND
NORTH MAIN STREET AND
NORTH OF ROCHAMBEAU AVENUE
THE FRENCH TROOPS
COMMANDED BY
COUNT ROCHAMBEAU
WERE ENCAMPED IN
1782
ON THEIR RETURN MARCH
FROM YORKTOWN
The stone is engraved below the plaque:
THIS SHAFT
WAS ERECTED BY THE
RHODE ISLAND SOCIETY
OF THE SONS OF THE
AMERICAN REVOLUTION
The monument stands four blocks north from Rochambeau Avenue at the “Y” junction of Summit Avenue and Brewster Street.
