"The Queen's Hotel, Laxey

The first official mention of this hotel is in 1863, but it is said to have opened in the spring of 1855. which would coincide with the building of the new road.

On February 1905, at about midnight, a fire broke out in a bedroom above the bar. There was no fire brigade in Laxey, and as all the water had to be brought from wells, there was no hope of extinguishing the flames.

Mrs Kinrade, the landlady, and here family were out of the building at the time and attempts were made to bring the fire under control, but without success.

At half-past one, all the back of the building being alight, the Douglas fire brigade was sent for. They arrived at about twenty minutes past two, and after laying a pipe to the river, pumped water to the fire. The whole of the building was, at this time, one mass of flames, and the brigade concentrated on preventing its spread to any adjoining buildings. This they succeeded in doing, but the hotel was completely gutted; only the bare walls were left standing.

The property belonged to Mr Samuel Jelly of the Saddle Hotel, Ramsey, and was held on lease by Boddington's Brewery (I.O.M.) Ltd.; Boddington's had sublet it to Mrs Sarah Kinrade, whose furniture was insured with the Royal for £400. The damage to the building was estimated to be in the region of £2000.

Before the fire, an advert in the Brewery sale catalogue of 1903 describes the Queen's as 'an old-established House of Call, standing on the main road from Douglas to Laxey, being the first licensed house on reaching the village when driving from Douglas nicely fitted throughout and of good repute. It contains dining, commercial and smoke rooms, six bed rooms, bar kitchens, cellar and other usual apartments. The stabling accomodatioln is adequate, making the property of compact description"
