The high water level marker is located on the wall inside the Ambleside Pier Head building in Waterhead on Lake Windermere in the Lake District.
"Windermere Lake ends a mile short of Ambleside at Waterhead, and can come as a shock to boat passengers expecting to be in the town. Crowded around the bay are boats, hotels, cafes, tourist shops, and places selling food for the ducks and swans.
Steamers and launches sail daily throughout the year between here and Bowness, about halfway down the 12 mile length of the lake, and Lakeside at the far end." (

'In November 2009, Cumbria experienced some of it's heaviest rainfall for over 30 years. In just 48 hours, the level of Windermere rose by over 7feet (2.1 metres), devastating many of the businesses and homes around the shoreline.
Just below this notice is a high water marker. indicating the highest-level that Windermere has ever reached.'
