Sharper Freeman was one of about 5,000 African Americans, many of whom were slaves, who fought in the Revolutionary War. The inscription on the gravestone of Sharper Freeman provides and interesting glimpse of colonial history in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Kidnapped from Africa, enslaved Sharper Freeman served in the Continental Army and was awarded his freedom and a pension.
