Tthe statue shows a rider on a reared horse, fighting a lion with a lance. The scene does not depict a specific person or event, but it can be argued that it resembles Greek hero Herakles, fighting the Nemean lion. Another statue on the eastern side of the stairs also depicts a scene from Greek mythology, an Amazon on Horseback.

A copy of the horse - without the horseman - is placed in front of the Welfen Castle, the castle of the kings of Hannover, as it closely resembles the "Horse of Saxony", the heraldic animal of Lower Saxony. |
