La Maternità ("Motherhood") is a life-sized bronze sculpture of a mother, holding a baby in her arms. The Statue, standing on a small stone base, was created in 1981 by the Italian sculptor Antonio Berti (1904-1990) and commemorates the victims of the bombing of 26 June 1944.

DEL
BOMBARDAMENTO
26 GIUGNO 1944
On 26 June 1944, San Marino was bombed by the British Royal Air Force which mistakenly believed it had been overrun by German forces and was being used to amass stores and ammunitions. The San Marino-Rimini railway was destroyed and 63 civilians died during the operation. The British government later admitted the bombing had been unjustified and that it had been executed on receipt of erroneous information.
You'll find the statue on the small green between the streets Contrada Omagnano and Contrada del Pianello, close to the upper cable car station.
