Fort Verde was a frontier fort in Arizona’s Verde Valley. The site of the fort was first occupied by troops in the Summer of 1870. Construction on the fort began in 1871 and wasn’t completed unit 1873. The fort was never enclosed by a stockade and featured as many as 22 buildings. Fort Verde was used by General George Crook in 1872-73 as base for his winter campaign to end major Indian resistance in central Arizona. By 1875 nearly 1,500 Indians had been placed on reservations, and troops assigned to Fort Verde were mainly responsible for seeing that the Indians stayed on the reservations. Troops remained at Fort Verde until 1891 when it was abandoned and sold at auction. Today the site of Fort Verde is preserved as the Fort Verde State Park. Only Four of the 22 building remain and are part of the state park. The visitors center and a small museum is in the old Administration Building. The Commanding Officers Quarters, The Bachelor Officer Quarters and the Surgeons Quarters still stand adjacent to the parade ground. Each of these buildings are available for self-guided tours. The Fort Verde State Historical Park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Source/Credit: ( visit link)
