Shamrock is located on Highway 16, six miles south of Drumright. It was first settled in 1910 when a general store opened. The town was named for Shamrock, Illinois. In the early 1910's, oil was discovered in the nearby Cushing-Drumright Oilfield and things went crazy. The town of Shamrock grew to have 10,000 residents, with thousands more camped in the area surrounding the town. Shamrock was a town of oilfield workers, saloons, gambling, and frequent gunfights.
In the early 1920's, however, the oil dried up, and so did the town. The population shrunk over the years until today, it is less than 100. The school and WPA-constructed gym are gone, the theater, bank, and numerous businesses are closed, and only remnants can be seen around town of its heyday. The town was officially dissolved in 2010 and is currently in receivership.
