In 1917, Compagnie Electrique de la Loire and Center set up a development project that exploited the power of two waterfalls (on one side on the Ance River of the South and the other on the Allier River) in a factory. commune located in Monistrol-d'Allier. The work of the two falls began simultaneously in 1918. However, after the First World War, the recruitment of labor was very difficult. This is a huge delay for the shipyards, especially the Allier waterfall, which will even be temporarily stopped in 1921.
In 1925, the construction site of the high voltage line Monistrol-Saint-Étienne begins and will be completed in December 1926. A year later, the equipment of the fall of the Ance du Sud is completed and the plant is put Operating.
However, electricity needs are increasing and the dam of Pouzas has a very small reservoir. It is therefore decided to build a second dam at Saint-Préjet d'Allier, 1,400 m upstream from the first. The latter, completed in 1939, is a second water tank 7 times larger, to supply more regularly the intake of water Pouzas and be able to produce energy with more flexibility.
In a difficult context, linked to the Second World War, the development of Allier Falls ended on September 30, 1941.
In 1956, following the nationalization of electricity generation, transmission and distribution companies, EDF became concessionaire of the factory.
