During the Civil War, the sloop-of-war USS Monongahela was ordered to attempt to run past Confederate batteries on the Mississippi River at Port Hudson, LA on the night of March 14–15, 1863. The ship ran aground on a bar and was bombarded by a Confederate battery. Oscar F. Eldredge became a casualty that night. His grave is marked by a 6' high marble obelisk which is inscribed:
