Steel Alloy Alarm Bell 530 is embossed on the bell yoke. Bell is hung on a short metal tower on the NW corner of the Upshur County Courthouse.

This bell was rung every day for many years in the early 1900's by W.A. Roberts to signal six o'clock p.m. closing time for all businesses; to call the firemen and citizens together when needed, and for all momentous occasions, including end of World War I. Donated by heirs of W.A. Roberts, 7-4-76.

"Mr. Roberts was born in Gilmer, Texas, March 1886 and has been employed with the (Texas & Pacific) railway company in various positions up to January 1, 1941 at which time he was promoted to superintendent of telegraphy, which position he held at the time of his retirement."
