In the Middle Ages the Holy Roman Empire did not have a capital. Instead, German emperors voyaged from one of their castles (Kaiserpfalz or Imperial castle) to the next. There were over 100 Imperial castles, with Nürnberg being one of the largest.
Construction of the castle began in 1027. For 600 years, until the 30 Years War, the castle at Nürnberg was an important imperial castle, and in the following centuries, all German kings and emperors stayed at the castle, most of whom on several occasions.
The Imperial castle is part of a larger fortification that also includes the Burgraves' Castle and the buildings of the Imperial City.
The castle was heavily damaged in World War II. It is now completely restored. The courtyard and other passage ways are open for everybody, but to visit the interior and/or the towers, one has to purchase a guided tour ticket. |
