EN Vachères was once surrounded by ramparts, one of which is called the "Grand Portail" (a name dating from the 16th century), then "Tour de l'horloge" because of the installation of a clock probably in the 18th century.
Only fleeting traces remain of the presumed medieval enclosure. Nevertheless, we can think that its shape has left its mark on the alignment of the houses bordering the village.
Large sections of 16th century surrounding walls have been preserved on the southwest face of the village overlooking the Banon Road to the round tower engaged. The line continues to the northwest towards the "Priory" (18th century) and the church of Saint-Christophe (late 13th century). Beyond that, the walls disappeared at the beginning of the 19th century due to a lack of means to keep them in place.
