From a sign at the base the missile:
Introduced in 1983 for submarine fleet use, the Tomahawk was designed for both land-attack and ship-attack missions. It can be launched from a Los Angeles-class nuclear fast attack submarines, surface ships, aircraft, or land platforms, using either conventional torpedo tubes or a verticallaunch system consisting of 12 missile tubes. The Tomahawk features a sophisticated guidance system which incorporates an onboard inertial navigation system (to guide the missile over water) and a terrain contour matching (TERCOM) system (to guide the missile over land). Underway the Tomahawk is fast, accurate and virtually unstoppable. The first combat launch of the Tomahawk from a submerged submarine took place during the PErsian Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm) in 1991 from USS Louisville (SSN-724).
