From the attached sign on the missile:
Polaris A-3 was developed to meet the need for a submarine-launched balistic missile (SLBM) with a longer range that either the A-1 or A-2. A-3 became operational in 1964 and was deployed on Layfayette class nuclear-powered fleet ballistic missile (FBM) submarines. With a range of 2,880 miles, A-3 left virtually no land target inaccessible. A-3 also featured a larger, redesigned warhead section that could accommodate one large warhead or multiple, independently-targetable re-entry vehicles (MIRV). Like the other two Polaris missiles, A-3 was launched by an air or gas ejection system which forced the missile from its launching tube and propelled it through water to the surface, where the rocket mototrr ignited and sent the the missile on its way. A-3 was the U.S. Navy's primary SLBM until the introduction of the Poseidon C-3 in 1971. Britain's Royal Navy commissioned four SSBNs in the late 1960's, all of which continues to carry A-3s.
