"Ville forte créée par les Espagnols en 1666, Charleroi connaît diverses dominations étrangères, marquées par la prédominance de la fonction militaire et l’occupation de la ville par une garnison jusqu’au début du 19e siècle.
À partir de 1830, la forteresse est progressivement démantelée et des projets d’extension urbaine voient le jour. Au moment des grandes revendications sociales et des luttes ouvrières de la fin du siècle, l’édification d’une nouvelle caserne rassure quelque peu le patronat et la bourgeoisie de la ville.
La caserne Caporal Trésignies est bâtie entre 1877 et 1882 ; elle prit par la suite le nom d’un héros national de la Première Guerre mondiale. Les bâtiments, disposés en quadrilatère autour d’une cour centrale, est accessible par un proche monumental. Le style de l’édifice est purement néogothique et évoque parfaitement l’architecture militaire du Moyen Âge : tours, chemins de ronde, créneaux et meurtrières décorent le bâtiment. Deux autres bâtiments sont ajoutés en 1938 et apportent une touche de modernité à l’ensemble avec leur architecture Art déco.
L’armée a quitté les lieux en 1976 ; la caserne a depuis été réaffectée en complexe d’activités économiques, de services administratifs, éducatifs et associatifs. Le porche, seule partie classée avec les deux tours de l’entrée principale, abrite pour sa part le musée des 2emes Chasseurs à pied."

The buildings, arranged in quadrilateral around a central courtyard, is accessible by a monumental close. The style of the building is purely Gothic and evokes perfectly the military architecture of the Middle Ages: towers, parapets, crenellations and loopholes decorate the building. Two other buildings were added in 1938 and bring a touch of modernity to the ensemble with their Art Deco architecture.
The army left the scene in 1976; the barracks have since been reallocated into a complex of economic activities, administrative, educational and associative services. The porch, the only part classified with the two towers of the main entrance, houses for its part the Museum of the 2nd Hunters on foot. "
