Russian born Nicholas Gorshenin, 25 October, 1922 (same age as my Dad), his father was an officer (Colonel) in the Russian army. During the Bolshevik Revolution the family of five children and mother got separated from the father, and had to trek across Siberia, before coming to Brisbane as refugees. They moved to Innisfail (a place that frequently records the highest rainfall for Australia), before moving to Balmain in Sydney, and then Camperdown.

Nick reluctantly left school aged 15, to help at his father's service station. 'Wikipedia' records that he spent the last few years of World War Two on Morotai, a northern island of Indonesia. On return to Australia Nick began commercial fishing at Eden on the southern NSW coast, before moving to Newcastle, where got a contract to 'shark-proof' mesh some of Newcastle's beaches. In 1954 he got a contract to mesh some of Sydney's beaches, and moved to Sydney - becoming an authority on Australian sharks, and appearing in the media. He became in local community action groups, and became an Alderman in 1960; running (unsuccessfully) as an Independent in the 1965 NSW State elections. He later helped form the 'Australia Party'.

He maintained a 'strong interest in local and international politics after leaving the Australia Party in the mid 1970s. Joan [his wife] died in 1987 and Gorshenin in [9 October,] 2005.'

Shark Master from 1949 to 1962
aboard vessels "Guild" and "Irene H".
Of Russian origin, Nick caught over 2,000
sharks and became a world authority
on shark behaviour.

His familiar presence off Manly
was always reassuring.

The bronze plaque is set in an angled concrete plinth, at the base of one of the many Norfolk pines, on The Corso, of the Esplanade at Manly Beach.
