It is the main facility of a special association of 15 municipalities in the districts of Laufen (BL) and Thierstein (SO) with a total of about 23,000 inhabitants.

The water is first biologically purified with the aid of microorganisms, then filtered in several stages and finally the remaining phosphate is chemically bound. The resulting biogas is used to heat the plant and covers about 80% of its electricity needs.
