The tombstone is inscribed:

Thus the gravestone proclaims. Most accounts state that Al was herding his sheep across a rancher's range and fell off his horse when the rancher chased the sheep. The alternative story is that he was caught and hung in 1888 along with three other sheep herder's in the area. Apparently the story has been changed to a shooting to discourage too much investigation.
