This bridge is a single arch stone bridge and crosses the line of the former Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway that connected Sheffield and Manchester. This section of the line closed in 1981 and now forms part of the Trans Pennine Trail a long distance cycling, walking and horse-riding route.

The bridge is on the main part of the Trans Pennine Trail, a coast-to-coast route between Southport and Hornsea and is 215 miles long. In the Pennine hills themselves there is also a north south section between York and Chesterfield.

The track on top f the bridge connects a number of farms but Bullhouse Hall Farm is the nearest to the bridge.
