The flag has a field of white with "CAT" in black box letters in the center of the field. Covering part of the A and a little of the C and T is a yellow triangle that the company describes as "blade-like".
In the late 1800s steam tractors were so large they tended to sink into soft soil. Some manufactures increased the size of the wheels to spread the weight distribution. Operators sometime put down planks for the tractors to drive on. Benjamin Holt came up with the idea of wrapping the planks around the tires of his tractors and the tracked vehicle was soon in production. The Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Company merged in the 1920s and the Caterpillar company was created.
The name Caterpillar had been used for a line of Holt equipment and the name came from the movement of the treads.
