All'incrocio di alcune delle più importanti arterie della città, il trivio dí Porta Ravegnana, cori il vicino Carrobbio, ospitava numerose attività commerciali e bancarie già dal Medioevo, costituendosi come il cuore commerciale e finanziario di Bologna. In esso, pràso la torre Asinelli, fu collocata da tempo immemorabile la croce di Porta, mentre addossata alla torre Garisenda venne costruita la chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie o Madonna di Porta; nel '1683 in questo luogo fu collocata, a cura dell'Arte dei Drappieri o degli Strazzaroli, la statua raffigurante il patrono cittadino San Petronio. La statua fu offerta dal cardinale lega-to Lazzaro Pallavicini e fu eseguita da Gabriele Brunelli, mentre il pie-distallo fu opera di Giovanni Battista Albertoni. Nel 1871, sia per motivi politici che di viabilità, la statua, che era pervenuta ai conti Ranuzzi, fu spostata nella basilica di San Petronio. Il 4 ottobre 2001 la statua del santo patrono della città è stata ricollocata nel trivio, riqualificandolo e abbellendolo con la sua interpretazione barocca dell'immagine del-l'antico "escovo che seppe difendere e proteggere la città.

Statue of S. Petronio
At the crossroads of some of the city's most important arteries, the trivio of Porta Ravegnana, the nearby Carrobbio, hosted many commercial and banking activities since the Middle Ages, constituting the commercial and financial heart of Bologna. In it, called the Asinelli tower, the Porta cross was placed from time immemorial, while the church of Madonna delle Grazie or Madonna di Porta was built against the Garisenda tower; in 1683, in this place, the statue representing the patron saint San Petronio was placed by the Arte dei Drappieri or Strazzaroli. The statue was offered by the Cardinal Lazzaro Pallavicini and was executed by Gabriele Brunelli, while the pie-distal was the work of Giovanni Battista Albertoni. In 1871, both for political reasons and viability, the statue, which had come to the Ranuzzi counts, was moved to the Basilica of San Petronio. On October 4, 2001, the statue of the patron saint of the city was relocated in the trivium, redeveloping it and embellishing it with its baroque interpretation of the image of the ancient "escudo" that was able to defend and protect the city.
