"Mary Virginia Thompson Gann, age 66 of Douglasville, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2016. She was born on November 9, 1949 in Savannah, Georgia, the daughter of the late Joseph Cleon Thompson and the late Mildred Lucille “Millie” West Thompson. Mary was a 1967 graduate of Douglas County High School. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Middle School Education (Summa Cum Laude) in 1990 from Georgia State University. She taught middle school science in Cobb County for several years before her lengthy career with the Douglas County School System from which she was the Teacher of the Year in 2011 at Mason Creek Middle School—the same year she retired. She was a member of the Lithia Springs Methodist Church but has attended Crossroads Church in Douglasville for the past ten years or more. Mary enjoyed travelling and going to the beach with her family. She also loved reading, snorkeling but, most of all she loved spending time with her grandkids and her family. Mary will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

"Mary is survived by her husband of nearly 49 years, F. Danny Gann of Douglasville; daughter and son-in-law: Angela Susan “Angie” and Joey Thomas of Douglasville; brother and sister-in-law: Joseph C. and Teresa Thompson; grandchildren: Merigan Ansley Thomas and Colton Daniel Thomas; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

"Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, August 28, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from Hightower’s Memorial Chapel in Douglasville with Pastor Greg Towler officiating.

"Entombment will follow in the Gann mausoleum at West Georgia Memorial Park in Carrollton.

"The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, August 27, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

"In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made by mail to The Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program, c/o The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486 Houston, Texas 77210-4486 (Specify ovarian cancer research in the memo line of your check) or by phone at 1-800-525-5841 (specify ovarian cancer research for your gift)." ~ Hightower Memorial Chapel
