The New York City skyline seen on this stamp is of lower Manhattan as viewed from New York harbor looking directly up Broadway. Many newer buildings dot the skyline today (and some have come and gone) but many of the buildings seen on the stamp are still clearly visible. These include the Standard Oil building (1922), the former Bank of New York building (1931), the Woolworth building (1913), the former American International building (1932) and 20 Exchange Place (1931) among others.

One way to see this view of New York City is to ride the Staten Island ferry. It’s free of charge and in addition to the view of Lower Manhattan you’ll see the Statue of Liberty which is also depicted on the stamp.

Also seen on the stamp is a four-engine propeller-driven Lockheed Constellation aircraft. The first commercial Constellations were based on a former military transport design modified for civil use. In 1946, TWA inaugurated a trans-Atlantic service from New York to Paris utilizing Constellations. Though a “modern” aircraft at the time this stamp was issued, Constellations gradually gave way to jet aircraft and are now relegated to air museums. When this stamp was issued in 1947, the 15c paid the international trans-Atlantic airmail rate to Europe and parts of northern Africa.
