"The first stone of the amphitheater was laid during the reign of Tiberius (14-37) .This project is the initiative of the Pompeii family, including Aulus Pomp (eius) Dumnom (otus), military tribune and prefect of Between the 3rd and 4th centuries, the ramparts surround the Gallo-Roman city, leaving the amphitheater projecting.
Its capacity is 18,000 spectators, making it one of the largest amphitheatres of Aquitaine Gaul. Elliptical in shape, it measures 141.4 m long and 118.2 m wide.
In the Middle Ages, the amphitheater was completely backfilled, we see today only the upper part of the building.
In 1821, Wlgrin de Taillefer made the first excavations of the site.
In 1875, the city council entrusted the creation of a garden-school on the site to the Horticultural Society. Today open to the public under the name of Arena Garden, the remains had to be covered with about 3.50 m of embankment. "

" La première pierre de l'amphithéâtre aurait été posée sous le règne de Tibère (14-37). Ce projet est à l'initiative de la famille Pompeia, notamment Aulus Pomp(eius) Dumnom(otus), tribun militaire et préfet des ouvriers. Entre le IIIe et IVe siècles, les remparts entourent la cité gallo-romaine, laissant en saillie l'amphithéâtre.
Sa capacité est de 18 000 spectateurs, ce qui en fait l'un des plus grands amphithéâtres de la Gaule aquitaine. De forme elliptique, il mesure 141,4 m de long pour 118,2 m de large.
Au Moyen Âge, l'amphithéatre a été complétement remblayé, on ne voit aujourd'hui que la partie haute de l'édifice.
En 1821, Wlgrin de Taillefer réalise les premières fouilles du site.
En 1875, le conseil municipal confie la création d'un jardin-école sur le site à la Société d'horticulture. Aujourd'hui ouvert au public sous le nom de jardin des Arènes, les vestiges ont dû être recouverts d'environ 3,50 m de remblai. "
