NRHP Nomination Form"The Amon B. King’s Men Monument is a 7.5-foot-tall bronze-cast statuary figure atop a 20.6-foot-tall octagonal shaft of granite in Refugio, Refugio County, Texas. Commissioned by the State of Texas for the 1936 Centennial, the seminude figure of a kneeling man, holding in one hand a broken sword and the other placed on a laurel leaf, was designed by sculptor Raoul Josset to symbolize the execution of Captain Amon B. King’s Texas Army auxiliary forces after the Battle of Refugio during the 1836 Texas Revolution. Completed in 1937, the monument is in the center of King’s Memorial Park, a public square, across from the county courthouse in Refugio. It retains a high degree of integrity and is in good condition."
