"It's been almost a year since the Food and Drug Administration told biotech company 23andMe Inc. to stop selling its direct-to-consumer genetic testing service for health results. So how confident is the pioneering startup about its future?
Confident enough to have just leased a much larger and flashier headquarters in downtown Mountain View. Eight-year-old 23andMe, backed by Google Inc. and headed by Anne Wojcicki, signed a lease last Wednesday for 899 W. Evelyn Ave. That's the brand-new, 68,500-square-feet building that Nuance had leased back in 2012, but never occupied. The new deal is actually a sublease with Nuance, which ended up staying in Sunnyvale.
The building is considered one of the choicest offices in the central business district and located spitting distance from the downtown transit center was developed by the Minkoff Group and designed by Brick LLP. Its innovative rooftop garden has attracted widespread attention, including from me.
It's a big step up space and profile-wise from 1390 Shorebird Way, the 22,000-square-foot headquarters 23andMe currently occupies in Mountain View's North Bayshore. (It's owned, unsurprisingly given its location, by Google.)" (
