EN: The path from Belalp to the Massa gorge was already made possible in the Middle Ages via this stone construction, which runs in a zig-zag staircase over a rock face that is about one hundred meters high. This section is called Steigle. Originally it was used to give the grazing animals access to the summer pastures in the otherwise fairly secluded valley below the glacier tongue of the Aletsch Glacier. Even today, this is still done, especially sheep spend the summer there. However, most users of the trail today are tourists on the well-known five-hour hike from Belalp to Riederalp.
