The emblem of the Knights of Pythias -- a knight's helmet with a shield superimposed upon two halberds, bearing the three letters of the Pythian motto, "Friendship, Charity, Benevolence" -- is at the top of the monument, complemented by palm fronds, noting Mr. Couger's membership in that organization; Mrs. Couger would have been a Pythian Sister if she participated. The family name, "Couger", is on the plinth, and above, the inscription reads:

J.O. Couger
Nov. 2, 1839
Dec. 3, 1915

Mary M. Couger
Mar. 10, 1850
Dec. 3, 1889

Gone but not forgotten
