L'église Notre Dame est en fait une ancienne église Abbatiale. L'Abbaye a été fondée en 580 par Simon, seigneur de Beaugency. A l'origine elle se situait dans l'enceinte du château-fort des sires de Beaugency.
Elle était dédiée à Saint Firmin, Saint Gentien, Saint Fuschien et Saint Victoric. Elle domine l'accès Nord au Pont sur la Loire.
Le choeur est doté d'un déambulatoire sur lequel donnent trois chapelles. Dans la nef, les colonnes sont puissantes et supportent des arcades en arc brisé.
C'est dans cette église qu'au XIIème siècle ont eu lieu deux évènements marquants.
D'abord, en 1104, l'excommunication du Roi Philippe I qui refusait d'arreter ses relations adultères avec Bertrade de Montfort en dépit des pressions de la Papauté.
Ensuite et surtout, le 21 mars 1152, le divorce du Roi Louis VII et d' Aliénor d'Aquitaine. Ce divorce et le remariage d'Aliénor avec Henri II Plantagenet a eu des consequences sur plusieurs siècles des Histoires de France et d'Angleterre.
L'Abbaye Notre Dame a été incendiée par les Protestants en 1567, la majeure partie des batiments primitifs ont disparu sauf la Maison de l'Abbé et la Tour du Diable.
L'Eglise, elle aussi incendiée, a été restaurée à partir de 1579 et au XVIIème siècle. Elle est de style Roman avec un transept réduit.

The Notre Dame church is actually an old abbey church. The Abbey was founded in 580 by Simon, Lord of Beaugency. Originally it was located within the walls of the castle of the lords of Beaugency.
It was dedicated to Saint Firmin, Saint Gentien, Saint Fuschien and Saint Victoric. It dominates the North access to the Bridge over the Loire.
The choir is equipped with an ambulatory on which give three chapels. In the nave, the columns are powerful and support arcades in broken arch.
It was in this church that two important events took place in the 12th century.
First, in 1104, the excommunication of King Philip I who refused to stop his adulterous relations with Bertrade de Montfort in spite of the pressures of the Papacy.
Then and especially, on 21 March 1152, the divorce of King Louis VII and Eleanor of Aquitaine. This divorce and the remarriage of Eleanor with Henry II Plantagenet had consequences over several centuries of the Histories of France and England.
The Notre Dame Abbey was burnt down by the Protestants in 1567, the majority of the primitive buildings disappeared except the House of the Abbot and the Tower of the Devil.
The church, also burnt down, was restored from 1579 and in the 17th century. It is Roman style with a reduced transept.
