Lake Vermillion Recreation Area is located 27 miles west of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Known for its clear waters and abundant fish, Lake Vermillion is a haven for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts.

In 1958, waters from the east fork of the Vermillion River were used to form the reservoir that is known today as Lake Vermillion. The Vermillion River, formerly known as Otter Stream, was first mapped in 1801 by French fur trappers. To Lakota Sioux, the word vermillion means “red paint”, and it is believed that Vermillion River is named for the red quartzite found along its bank.

Lake Vermillion’s 512 acres of water are lush with sport fish such as walleye, northern pike, crappie, and bluegill. Boat ramps provide easy access to the lake’s interior, and a fully accessible fishing pier enables anglers of all abilities to share in the abundant catch. In the fall, waterfowl flock to Lake Vermillion, providing excellent hunting opportunities for sportsmen.
