THE JESSOP HOSPITAL
FOR WOMEN
1878-2001
Founded in 1878 by Sheffield steelmaker
Thomas Jessop (1804-1887)
who donated £30,000 towards the costs.
It replaced the former Sheffield Hospital for Women,
which was established in 1864 in Figtree Lane.
The hospital was transferred in 2001 to the Jessop Wing
of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
This building was restored by the University of Sheffield
in 2009 and is now home to its Department of Music.
One of the 28 listed buildings or structures
preserved within the University estate.
