Les écuries ont été construites en 1707 sur un plan de Robert de Cotte, élève de Jules Hardouin-Mansart.
La mort du duc Charles-Belgique-Hollande de La Trémoïlle en 1709 vint interrompre le projet en pleine réalisation. Seule l’aile orientale du bâtiment fut construite, c’est cette partie qui existe aujourd’hui.
Ce bâtiment devint une prison de 1870 à 1925, recueillant notamment bon nombre de communards (la Commune 1871).
Le bâtiment principal du château accueille depuis les années 1930 un collège public. Les écuries abritent l'école municipale d'arts plastiques, le Centre régional « Résistance et Liberté » et le centre d'interprétation géologique du Thouarsais.

The stables were built in 1707 on a plan by Robert de Cotte, student of Jules Hardouin-Mansart.
The death of Duke Charles-Belgium-Holland of La Trémoïlle in 1709 interrupted the project in full realization. Only the eastern wing of the building was built, it is this part that exists today.
This building became a prison from 1870 to 1925, including many communards (Commune 1871).
The main building of the castle welcomes since the 1930s a public college. The stables house the municipal school of plastic arts, the regional center "Resistance and Freedom" and the geological interpretation center of Thouarsais.
