The Bathurst Gaol was built in the 1880s, with the main entrance being constructed in 1886 of stone in the Victorian Mannerist style. Beneath the coat of arms (which bears the 1886 date of construction) is a lion's head holding in its mouth a symbolic key. to the right of the entrance is the former Deputy Governor's residence, and to the left the former Governor's residence and garden both being a stuccoed brick, two storey building in the Italianate style.
