Vingt-six lettres formant trois mots, « PARTIRENT », « DÉRIVÈRENT » et « HORIZON », sont ancrées dans le sol devant le lac Saint-Louis. Les lettres, de couleur bleue, sont enfouies dans le sol à différents niveaux de sorte à créer une ligne sinueuse à la manière d’une vague.
Le sens de ces mots, qui évoquent un déplacement, une traversée, est supporté par l’apparence visuelle des lettres qui, elles, réfèrent plutôt, par leur disposition et leur couleur, à ces deux espaces du voyage que sont l’eau et le ciel. C’est donc un grand départ qui est fantasmé par le spectateur observant l’horizon et déambulant dans ce parc.
L’intégration de Monument pour L dans le paysage est par ailleurs notable. À l’origine, 350 pas entre la rive et l’œuvre donnaient l’impression d’un va-et-vient entre les deux éléments. En 2000, pour des raisons de conservation, l’espace a été réaménagé pour accueillir deux chemins : l’un lie l’œuvre à un cercle entouré d’arbustes symbolisant un campement temporaire, l’autre à un buisson qui commémore les disparus en mer. Ainsi, ces trois mots ne doivent pas se comprendre comme un message transmis, mais plutôt comme un appel à une lecture poétique du lieu et de son potentiel sémantique.

ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
Near Lake Saint-Louis, twenty-six blue-coloured letters rise out of the ground to different heights, creating curved lines reminiscent of waves. The letters form three words: “PARTIRENT,” “DÉRIVÈRENT,” and “HORIZON.”
The meaning of these words – “they departed,” “they drifted,” “horizon” – evoking a voyage or ocean crossing, is supported by the positioning and colour of the letters, which refer to the two spaces of travel that are water and sky. Viewers strolling in the park can thus observe the horizon and fantasize about leaving on a journey.
Monument pour L is notable for its integration into the landscape. Originally, there were 350 steps between the shore and the artwork, giving the impression of a coming-and-going between the two elements. In 2000, for conservation reasons, the space was relandscaped to include two paths: one linking the artwork to a circle surrounded by bushes symbolizing a temporary encampment; the other to a shrub that commemorates those lost at sea. Thus, the words forming the artwork should be understood not as a message transmitted but as an appeal to a poetic reading of the site and its semantic potential.
