The so-called Prince of Wales Tower was built at the end of the 12th century. This building is part of the fortifications that surrounded the city, it also served as a city gate, housing the garrison and grain warehouse.
From the 17th century, this tower became a prison where were locked up the false-salters at the time of the gabelle, salt tax instituted in France in the middle of the XIVth century.
Towards 1550, certain provinces including Poitou, by buying the tax with the king, became provinces redimées. In these regions, salt was ten times cheaper. The smugglers, so-called false-salters, seized every opportunity to pass this commodity Vendée (producing country) to Touraine and Anjou.
Traffickers arrested by the Gabelous in the Thouars area were then locked in the Prince of Wales Tower.
After the abolition of the gabelle, the Tower was still used as a place of imprisonment for convicted criminals. Around 1880, it was used as official housing for teachers of the city.
