La Tour Porte au Prévost était l'entrée principale de la ville au nord et en cas de guerre, sa meilleure défense.
D'après Jean Mesqui, elle aurait été construite en deux étapes, "de deux éléments accolés l'un à l'autre une tour-porte rectangulaire du XIIe siècle, puis au XIIIe siècle, une tour-porte à deux tourelles circulaires dont le talus de base (que l'on voit dans le fossé) est de type angevin, donc d'inspiration anglaise".
Les portes intérieures et extérieures sont en arcs busés, défendues autrefois par deux herses et trois assommoirs. "
