The Amherst Cultural Council sponsored the Amherst’s Electrical Box Makeover Project that on September 15, 2018 added three new painted utility boxes to the downtown area of Amherst. The box on North Pleasant and Main Streets features two poets important to the history of Amherst. On the street side is Emily Dickinson who was born (December 10, 1830), lived, wrote her poetry, died (May 15, 1886) and is buried in Amherst. On the sidewalk side is Robert Frost who lived in Amherst while he was on the faculty of Amherst College for over 40 years between 1917 and until his death in 1963.
The Emily Dickinson side features a portrait of the Belle of Amherst and the famous quote “Pardon My Sanity In A World Insane”. The Robert Frost side contains a portrait of Poet Laureate of the United States and the quote "Never be bullied into silence".
