DESCRIPTION DE L'OEUVRE
La sculpture de Claude Lamarche est située dans le jardin devant l’entrée de la bibliothèque L’Octogone. Cette œuvre monumentale prend la forme d’une grande flèche en acier de couleur jaune qui pointe vers le sol et s’enfonce dans une pyramide bétonnée. Sur l’extrémité supérieure de la tige s’accroche une autre flèche de plus petite taille et de couleur rouge. La courbe de cette dernière contraste avec la rigidité de la ligne principale et fait persister une tension entre les deux éléments principaux. Cet assemblage donne l’impression que la plus petite flèche sert à redresser la plus grande qui s’appuie sur un angle de 70 degrés.
Signal dans l’espace a pour objectif de signifier la marque du geste créateur dans l’environnement. Autoréflexive, cette œuvre se signale donc elle-même, en plus de pointer dans la ville l’emplacement d’un lieu culturel d’importance, soit la bibliothèque. Ainsi, il s’agit d’un commentaire de l’artiste sur la culture : « Cette œuvre est un signal à la nécessité d’encourager l’acte créateur et la liberté d’expression », peut-on lire sur une petite plaque située sur la base bétonnée. Il est possible de dénoter dans la facture brute des matériaux de même que dans la thématique de la signalétique une récurrence qui caractérise les œuvres d’art public de l’artiste.

ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
Claude Lamarche’s sculpture is situated in the garden in front of the entrance to Bibliothèque L’Octogone. This monumental artwork is in the form of a giant yellow-coloured steel arrow that points toward the ground and sinks into a concrete pyramid. On the upper end of the rod is hooked another, smaller, red-coloured arrow. This arrow is curved providing a contrast with the rigidity of the main thrust and creating tension between the two principal elements. This grouping gives the impression that the smaller arrow is being used to straighten the larger one, which is leaning at a 70-degree angle.
The objective of Signal dans l’espace is to signify the mark of the creative gesture in the environment. Self-reflexive, this artwork thus points to itself, as well as pointing to an important cultural site within the city: the library. Thus, it is a comment by the artist on culture: “This work signals the need to encourage creative acts and freedom of expression” is inscribed on a small plaque attached to the concrete base. The rough craftsmanship of the materials and the theme of the signage are both recurrent in the artist’s public works of art.
