With Rosewood Cemetery ( visit link) into disrepair in the late 40's, Galveston was in need of a new cemetery for negro burials. Construction of Memorial Cemetery began in August of 1950 on approximately two and a half acres directly south of Municipal Cemetery along 59th St. While there is no clear division between Memorial and Municipal Cemeteries, Memorial has defined curbs and sidewalks, making it relatively simple to differentiate between the two.
