While the Wiradjuri (local indigenous Aborigines - that still make up 10% of the population) have lived here for centuries, if not millenia, it was first discovered by Europeans in 1829, by Charles Sturt. It started to be developed in the early 1860's, and was proclaimed a town / Borough in 1885.
While the sign also proclaims the Population as 5,000, that would include the surrounding farmland, as the census shows a continuing decline in the population, with 3,746 being counted in 2016. [Extra information courtesy of Wikipedia: (

The town is located on the Murrumbidgee River, a major contributor to the irrigation of the RIverina region. The Newell, and the Sturt Highways intersect near town, making it a popular stopping place.
