EDMOND — By next spring, people's classic cars, boats, RVs and other expensive toys too big or too prized to store at the house could have their own upscale home away from home.

Garage Condos of Oklahoma started construction this week on 86,000 square feet of high-end, climate-controlled storage space at 3200 Technology Drive just west of the intersection of Broadway Avenue and 33rd Street.

Developer Chris Carllson said he got the idea when his retired parents, Richard and Jacki, bought a 42-foot, Class A motor home and had nowhere to store it out of the weather. He visited storage centers in other parts of the country and decided the concept would work here.

Likely condo buyers, he said, are car collectors, RV owners, boat owners, "or anyone wanting to use the storage space as a personal workshop or 'man-cave.' ”

"Units are ideal for storage of seasonal luxuries, creating a workshop or office space, or simply the perfect getaway to pursue the hobbies and passions you enjoy," he said.

Prices will range from $70,000 to $225,000 depending on unit size, he said. Buyers will arrange for their own interior build-out and finish to suit them.

"Your garage condo reflects your personality and passion - because you customize it to fit your needs," Carllson said on the company webpage, garagecondosofok.com.

The condo center will provide a clubhouse and other amenities meant to create "a real community," Carllson said.

“If you have a classic car collection or an RV, prized possessions that are near and dear to your heart, don't you want to store and care for those treasures in something better than a cheap, hot, metal building you rent or subject it to the Oklahoma weather elements?” he asked in marketing materials.

Carllson said he consulted with Glenn McWilliams, a condo storage expert, and Todd Nordstrom of Nordstrom Commercial Builders in Denver.

Tenant amenities will include prewired high-speed internet and cable, high bay ceilings, tilt-up concrete construction and 10-22 foot wide overhead doors, he said. Common amenities will include full-time monitored security cameras and wide commercial drive aisles.
