Cet élégant édifice fut achevé en 1920 pour loger le Mechanics' Institute of Montreal, la plus ancienne bibliothèque de prêt payant au pays. Créé en 1828, cet institut offrait aux ouvriers et plus tard aux ouvrières une formation technique et des « connaissances utiles ». Le bâtiment reflète les idéaux et la mission de l'organisme par ses médaillons sculptés illustrant les arts mécaniques, sa bibliothèque et ses salles de lecture parées de chêne et de marbre, enfin ses salles de conférences, de cours et d'expositions. La bibliothèque Atwater est le dernier édifice des Mechanics' Institutes à conserver sa fonction d'origine au Canada.

Since its completion in 1920, this elegant building has housed the Mechanics' Institute of Montreal, the oldest subscription library in Canada. Established in 1828, the Institute provided working men, and later women, with technical training and "useful knowledge." The building embodies the ideals and mission of the organization with its sculpted medallions representing the mechanical arts; its library and reading rooms decorated in oak and marble; and its lecture hall, classrooms, and exhibit rooms. The Atwater Library is the last Mechanics' Institute building in Canada that continues to serve its original purpose.
