Hercule doit nettoyer les écuries du roi Augias en une journée. Il détourne alors le cours du fleuve Alphée pour lui faire traverser les immenses écuries.
L’originalité de l’œuvre réside avant tout dans l’emploi des matériaux ; l’auteur invente un alliage de plomb armé pour la statue d’Hercule.
Pierre Roche présente au Salon de 1896 son projet de fontaine.
Les Questeurs du Sénat autorisent l'installation de cette statue qui appartient à l'Etat dans le Jardin du Luxembourg en 1902. Le groupe est attribué au Sénat le 8 septembre 1903.
Il est décidé, pour des raisons budgétaires, que cette statue serait adossée à un massif de verdure et non intégrée, comme le souhaitait Pierre Roche, en tant que décor d'une fontaine.

The originality of the work resides above all in the use of materials; the author invents an armed lead alloy for the statue of Hercules.
Pierre Roche presents his fountain project at the Salon of 1896.
The Questeurs du Sénat authorize the installation of this statue which belongs to the State in the Luxembourg Garden in 1902. The group is attributed to the Senate on September 8, 1903.
It was decided, for budgetary reasons, that this statue would be backed by a green massif, and not integrated, as Pierre Roche wished, as the decoration of a fountain.
