NRHP Nomination Form"
Constructed in 1918 as Dallas Fire Station No. 16, the 2-story building at 5501 Columbia Avenue served the East Dallas neighborhood through the post World War II era. Architect H.A. Overbeck incorporated influences from the Prairie School and Mission Revival styles into this rectangular composition in a manner typical of contemporaneous institutional buildings in Texas. The red brick building features a curvilinear Mission Revival parapet, cast stone geometric detailing, and knee brackets supporting a shed roof with red clay tiles. The symmetrical facade incorporates twin bay doors surmounted by banks of multiple paned windows lighting the second floor living quarters. Exhibiting minimal alterations, the fire station retains a high degree of its historic integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association."
