Panels depict the military installations in San Angelo: Fort Concho, the San Angelo Army Air Field and Goodfellow Air Force Base.
The Fort Concho panel commemorates the 22 years that Ft. Concho was an active military post here. It was both a cavalry and infantry post. Two of the commanders are pictured on the left side of the mural. Across the bottom are two mounted soldiers with the 10th U.S. Cavalry coat of arms between. Three Indian Chiefs (Kiowa, Apache, and Comanche) are depicted on the upper right corner. In the center is the outline of Texas. There is a handgun on one side and a rifle on the other. In the bottom right is a cannon.
The San Angelo Army Air Field panel commemorates the training field was here. The 34th Flying Training Wing and the Bombardier Training School was activated in 1943. The mural shows the cadets arriving via the train station in the lower left corner. The center shows the bugs bunny character setting astride a bomb - this was the training school emblem. A portrait of Col Palmer is in the upper left corner. After the end of WWII the city reclaimed the acreage for the city airport.
The Goodfellow Air Force Base panel is the portrait of Lt. Goodfellow for whom the base is named. He was a native of San Angelo and died in WWI while flying a mission over France. Below him are six emblems for different time periods in the base's history.
Three airplanes are on the mural. A blue and yellow BT13, a gold T6 and a gray B-25. On the bottom right an aircraft is engulfed in flames, but it wasn't depicting an accident. It was part of Goodfellow's training for firefighters.
Goodfellow AFB provides Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance training for all branches of the military not just Air Force.
