Well, we think the courtroom is impressive. What also is impressive is the view from the clock tower. It is said that on a clear day one can stand on the tower balcony and see the hills 20 miles away. (We think you can see Florence main street if you look just in the right place.) I can testify that on a colorful fall day, the view is spectacular.

During World War II, the balcony was used for air watches by the Civilian Defense. If you would like to go on the observation deck, you can arrange a tour with one of the court-house personnel. You will have to go up to the third floor. (Normally, this floor is only accessible by special request.) From there you will climb 47 steps up to the bell tower. When you get there, you will be 125 feet from the ground. There is another 13 steps to the clock itself.

Beneath the clock on the balcony is a huge bell, and the hammer which strikes the bell weighs forty pounds. If you are up in the tower when that bell goes off, you'll feel your whole body vibrate, and you better cover your ears.
